Go private or not go private?

I have been noticing lately lots of people are going private in the blog world. Please leave a comment telling me your opinions about whether or not to do this. I am wondering why, are people paranoid or is it really a good idea. I can't decide what to do so leave your opinion so that I can decide what to do! Thanks!

I'm thinking most people are a little paranoid. Unless you have tons and tons of people looking at your blog. I only have close friends, and family, and they don't even look every day. I really haven't heard any creepy stories. I make sure not to put my address, and I took out our last name, just because. But, I don't even think that is really necessary, unless you have lots more people looking at yours than I do. Good luck!

Oh yeah, to see Mamma Mia. It's a date. How about Friday at 8:00?

I think people are more paranoid. I have asked Brandon who is very much in the computer scene and has said we have nothing to worry about. There is no need to list your address, phone numbers, schools, bank accounts, and ss# on your blog. I don't ever put down the names of places we frequent. I have more friends that say there are certain people in their lives that would prefer them not to know what they are doing. I think that is funny. Do they honestly think their lives are that interesting? I will support your decision.

I agree that most of it is being a little parinoid, but I understand how some may feel better by having their blog private.

I personally don't really care for it. I like using a feed reader to read everyones blogs, and I have to physically remember to 'check in' to my private ones, and alot of times I don't have time too.

Also another thing about being private it prevents old friends from being able to contact you. Blogger hasn't really figured out a way to contact a person if you want to get and 'invite' to the blog. So if that person doesn't have your email then they can't access your blog. I have 'found' some people from blog hopping, and am always bummed when I can't see their blog.

If you are really worried about who is reading your blog you can get a sitemeter that tracks where all your readers come from. It shows how they were referred to your site (ie, another blog, google search etc.)

I personally would never go private, but that is just me. I am always pretty vague about our location, and don't really use our last name either...but I think if someone really wanted to find me they could do it...even if I had a private blog.

Okay...I will step off my soapbox now. Sorry about the novel. :)

Hey Bethany, don't know if you remember me or not but I used to hang out with you guys some in 10th grade. I saw your blog from Crystals- that's why my vote is NOT going private- I love being able to find old friends! But I am paranoid so I try to keep mine pretty anonymous- no last name, or details about where I live or where my kids go to school etc. (oh and no naked kid pictures!) Good luck with the decision- I didn't know you and Tait got married but you are a cute couple and your kids are gorgeous! It's good to see you doing well!

I went private for a while, but it was kind of a hassle, so I reversed it. If you do...invite me.

I think that a lot of people that go private are trying to secure a level of safety and privacy for their kids and their family. I have like 7 blogs that I run, and I have don't feel that it is a problem to be public for me. But I know that one of my sisters in law is worried about child preditors and finding her girls, so she went private. Another thing, you could do is to monator people's comments. So you personally have to approve them before they get posted. I have heard people say that they get random, sometimes scary people making comments on their blogs, and they don't know who they are, so now they have the control. Whatever you chose to do, I love checking in on the Rudd Family adventures... so please include me in being able to see your blog!

Most importantly, if you go private I won't be able to blogstalk you anymore, and that would be the biggest downside to going private, so the answer is obvious!

Hey Bethany, it's Heather :) What a cute blog you have! I have a lot of friends that went private, but most actually changed their mind because it turned into a hassle. There are a few things you can do to make it safer. I personally don't have our last name on our blog. You can definitely not list any personal information, or when you are going to be out of town, or things like that. Also, I think the best thing you can do, is to go into your settings and you can make sure that your blog is not in the blog listings and cannot be found through search engines. I have a tracker and I noticed that once I did I had a lot less people looking through my blog, especially from random other countries. Just a few thoughts!

Bethany I can tell you why Evan's blog is private it is because I am 100% paranoid. Also because once I clicked "next blog" a few times and in 5 clicks I accidentally found "naked blog". I thought that perhaps there exists a blogging crowd that knows they can find "naked blogs" on blogger and wouldn't want them to find Evan in their search. But it is a personal choice - if you don't go private just be cautious about what info you provide.

It's all just personal. With the Stephenie Meyer info, it got out that Kemery had a blog. Anyhow, it limited what I could put up when people were copying pictures off my blog and using them at work for sabotage. Sounds lame, but totally true. So I just got tired of it so we went private. The whole work thing is something people don't think of. As long as you don't let on to those people you have one, you should be fine as far as that goes. It's probably different being in Utah than in AZ where you probably don't associate as much with work people on a personal level.
